What it is
The Promenade des Anglais is the symbol of Nice: a broad walking and cycling esplanade above the turquoise sea, lined with Belle Époque palaces such as the Negresco. Its blue chairs (chaises bleues) have been a city emblem since the 1950s, and the area became part of UNESCO World Heritage in 2021.
History
The promenade was begun in 1820 at the initiative of Nice's English winter colony, funded by the Reverend Lewis Way, and completed in 1824. First called the Camin deis Anglés, it was renamed after the 1860 annexation of Nice by France and was widened and lined with palms over the Belle Époque, reaching its present double-lane layout around 1930.
