Address: Torremolinos
What it is
Today La Carihuela is the gastronomic heart of Torremolinos, famous for its "pescaíto" (small fried fish) and its beachfront restaurants along the promenade. The quarter keeps a relaxed, traditional charm with low houses and is ideal for a seaside stroll and a fish lunch by the beach.
History
La Carihuela remained a small fishing neighbourhood well into the 1980s; after the Second World War its fleet numbered around 50 boats. As tourism grew, many fishermen abandoned their boats and opened restaurants and beach bars, and the promenade was built in 1972. In the 1950s and 1960s the sands were trodden by Hollywood stars such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra.
