Parque de la Batería
in Torremolinos, Spain
Large urban park with a boating lake, fountains and viewpoints; nature plus panoramic views over the bay.
Where it is
A large urban park on a hill overlooking Málaga bay, between the centre of Torremolinos and the La Carihuela coast.
What it is
At around 74,000 square metres it is the largest green space in Torremolinos. Attractions include an artificial lake of over 9,000 square metres with pedal boats, a 15-metre viewing tower with coastal views and several preserved historic cannon, making it a popular spot for walks and family outings.
History
The strategic hill was used to defend the coast from Moorish times onward. In 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, engineers built modern protected gun emplacements here, with cannon, ammunition stores and tunnels. The military abandoned the site in the 1950s and handed it to the town; after a long reclamation, the Parque de la Batería opened in 2007.
