Torremolinos is, hands down, the gay capital of the Costa del Sol and one of Europe's most established and best-loved LGBTQ+ destinations. Everything orbits La Nogalera, a multi-level pedestrian complex right in the town centre: unglamorous by day, but after dark it becomes a dense warren of more than thirty bars, terraces, cafés and clubs packed shoulder to shoulder. That concentration is the whole point — you bar-hop on foot, drifting from a quiet drinks spot to a drag show to a club that runs until sunrise. Venues like El Gato Lounge (a hugely popular cocktail lounge) and the area's cabaret and drag bars set the tempo.
What makes Torremolinos work is that the gay scene isn't only nocturnal. There's a proper gay beach at Playa del Bajondillo, where the Eden Beach Club and Paraíso Beach Club fly rainbow flags side by side, a ten-minute walk from the centre. There are well-established saunas and a cruising culture, gay-friendly hotels (the Ritual Torremolinos is almost an institution), and an easy, unpretentious vibe where British retirees, bears, young party crowds and families all coexist. It's cheap sun, sea and daytime fun, then full-throttle nightlife.
For a Swiss traveller it's an easy win: a short, cheap flight to Málaga (20 minutes away by commuter train), warm weather nearly year-round, prices far gentler than at home, and a compact queer scene you can cover on foot without a car. The blend of an Andalusian seaside town — La Carihuela and its fried-fish chiringuitos — with a fully-fledged gay capital makes it perfect both for a party weekend and for a beach holiday with an LGBTQ+ stamp.

Why it's a gay destination
Torremolinos is where Spain's gay scene began. In the 1960s, when it was still a fishing village taking off as a tourist resort under Franco, the Pasaje Begoña became the epicentre of European queer life on the coast: bars run by or open to LGBTQ+ people, among them Tony's Bar (1962, run by a British couple), widely regarded as the first gay bar in Spain. The regime, hostile to homosexuality, looked the other way because tourist money outweighed ideology. That ended on the night of 24 June 1971 with the Great Raid of the Pasaje Begoña: more than 300 people caught up in it, 114 arrested for 'public scandal', and foreigners deported. The scene scattered and tourism slumped.
Far from erasing Torremolinos, that crackdown turned it into a symbol — the BBC has called the town the place 'where the gay rights movement began in Spain'. Today the Pasaje Begoña is recognised as an LGBTQ+ site of memory, and every summer the town stages one of southern Europe's largest Pride celebrations, proudly reclaiming that pioneering heritage.
