What it is

La Nogalera is the social heart of Torremolinos' queer scene: a compact area over several levels with dozens of bars, clubs, drag venues, restaurants and shops, where nightlife runs almost around the clock. It is the first port of call for LGBTQ+ travellers and the focus of Torremolinos Pride.

History

La Nogalera ("walnut grove") is a purpose-built pedestrian complex that has been identified as an LGBTQ+ space since the late 1950s and 1960s, making it older than Stonewall and one of Europe's oldest gay districts. Tony's Bar, opened here in 1962 and still trading, is considered Spain's first gay bar. Under Franco, Torremolinos was one of the few places where gay men from across Spain could meet in relative safety.
