East Side Gallery

in Berlin, Germany

At over 1,300 m, the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, painted by 118 artists from 21 countries.

Where it is

The East Side Gallery runs along Mühlenstraße in Friedrichshain, on the bank of the Spree between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaum Bridge.

Address: Hedwig-Wachenheim-Straße, 10243 Berlin

What it is

Around a hundred murals line the wall segments, among them Dmitri Vrubel's Fraternal Kiss and Birgit Kinder's Trabant breaking through the Wall. Visiting is free and possible at any time; a walk along the Spree links the gallery with the Oberbaum Bridge and Friedrichshain's nightlife.

History

In 1990 more than a hundred artists from around the world painted this 1.3-kilometre preserved stretch of the Berlin Wall. The result is the longest surviving section of the Wall and the longest open-air gallery in the world, now a protected monument that has been restored several times.
