Reichstag

in Berlin, Germany

Parliament building with a walk-in glass dome and panoramic views; free, but online registration is required.

Where it is

The Reichstag sits on Platz der Republik in the government quarter of Berlin-Mitte, just a few steps north of the Brandenburg Gate.

Address: 1 Platz der Republik, 11011 Berlin

What it is

The seat of Germany's parliament can be visited free of charge: the glass dome and roof terrace give panoramic views over the government district and the city centre. Entry requires advance online registration, and the climb up the dome's spiralling ramps is a highlight of any Berlin trip.

History

The building was erected between 1884 and 1894 to designs by Paul Wallot for the parliament of the German Empire and was badly damaged in the Reichstag fire of 1933. After reunification Norman Foster rebuilt it from 1995 to 1999, adding today's walk-up glass dome, and the German Bundestag has met here again since 1999.
