What it is
The museum presents changing exhibitions on the art, history and activism of LGBTIQ* communities and is regarded as one of the most important queer cultural institutions in the world. Alongside the exhibitions it offers guided tours, events and a library and archive for researchers.
History
Founded in 1985, the Schwules Museum was the first museum in the world devoted solely to gay history and culture. Since 2013 it has occupied a former printing works and has broadened its programme to lesbian, trans, bisexual and queer lives; its archive holds periodicals dating back to 1896 and around 20,000 books.
