Neighborhood
Kreuzberg & Neukölln
in Berlin, Germany
Alternative, younger queer scene with clubs and bars.
Where it is
Kreuzberg and Neukölln are neighbouring districts in the south-east of inner Berlin, on either side of the Landwehrkanal and closely linked through Sonnenallee and northern Neukölln.
Address: 72 Kottbusser Damm, 10967 Berlin
What it is
Today the two districts form the young, queer and alternative heart of Berlin, with countless LGBTIQ* bars and clubs, late-night kiosks, street art and a lively going-out scene around Kottbusser Tor, Schlesisches Tor and Weserstraße. By day there are cafés, markets such as the Turkish Market on the Maybachufer and Görlitzer Park; by night it is one of the key centres of Berlin nightlife.
History
During the division Kreuzberg was a cheap fringe district of West Berlin and became a hub of squatter, migrant and subcultural life. After the Wall fell, part of the queer and alternative scene shifted into adjoining northern Neukölln, which has changed rapidly since the 2000s.
