Amager Strandpark

in Copenhagen, Denmark

A five-kilometre artificial beach a short Metro ride from the centre, with clothing-optional stretches that are popular with gay men alongside the general crowd.

Where it is

Amager Strandpark lies on the east coast of the island of Amager, only about 5 km from the city centre and reachable by the M2 metro line.

Address: Dykkerstien, 2300 Copenhagen

What it is

With a total of about 4.6 km of sandy beach, Amager Strandpark is Copenhagen's largest and closest beach, with a lagoon, green areas and year-round activities. In summer it is very popular with families, sunbathers and watersports enthusiasts. Thanks to the metro link it is easy to combine with a visit to the city.

History

The beach park was first laid out in 1934; in 2005 a roughly 2 km artificial island was added. The City of Copenhagen invested around 25 million euros to create an engineered beach landscape that also acts as coastal protection. The island is separated from the original shore by a lagoon crossed by three bridges.
