Freetown Christiania

in Copenhagen, Denmark

A self-governing alternative community founded in 1971 on former military land, known for its murals, workshops and free-spirited atmosphere.

Where it is

Christiania lies in the Christianshavn district on the grounds of a former military barracks, east of the city centre.

Address: Freetown Christiania, 1441 Copenhagen

What it is

Christiania is an alternative quarter of self-built houses, street art, workshops, cafés and concert venues such as Den Grå Hal hall. It is a unique place to experience alternative Danish culture, though photography is banned in parts and the house rules must be respected. Cannabis was long present here, but the open dealing street was shut down; the trade remains illegal.

History

In September 1971 local residents occupied the abandoned military site and declared the autonomous Freetown Christiania. The Danish government declared it a social experiment in 1972, and its status has since been the subject of many disputes. Today it is a self-governing community with its own flag and consensus-based governance.
