What it is
Strøget is Copenhagen's main shopping street, ranging from international chains to luxury boutiques and Danish design houses. Lively squares, fountains, street performers and cafés line the route. It is ideal for strolling through the centre and soaking up city life.
History
The roughly 1.1 km axis was closed to traffic on a trial basis in 1962 and permanently in 1964, making it one of Europe's first major pedestrian zones. The project was initially controversial but quickly proved a success and later became a model for car-free city centres worldwide. Over the following decades the pedestrian network around Strøget expanded greatly.
