Bellevue Beach (Klampenborg)
in Copenhagen, Denmark
A popular sandy beach north of the city, reachable by S-train, with a long-established gay section at its northern end and a young, easy-going crowd.
Where it is
Bellevue is in Klampenborg north of Copenhagen on the Øresund, easily reached from the centre by train to Klampenborg station.
What it is
With up to half a million visitors a year, Bellevue is one of the region's most popular beaches, known for its fine sand and clear water. It is also a well-known nude beach with a well-attended gay section at its northern end. The proximity to the Dyrehaven forest and the Jacobsen design make a day trip especially rewarding.
History
The beach opened to paying bathers in the summer of 1932. The celebrated architect and designer Arne Jacobsen created its blue-and-white striped lifeguard towers and distinctive kiosks, as well as the bathing cabins, tickets and staff uniforms. These functionalist structures made Bellevue an icon of Danish design.
