Where it is
Studiestræde runs through the historic Latin Quarter (Latinerkvarteret) parallel to the Strøget shopping street, in the heart of the old town.
Address: Studiestræde, 1554 Copenhagen
What it is
Much of Copenhagen's gay nightlife is concentrated around Studiestræde, from cosy classics like Centralhjørnet and the themed Jailhouse CPH to the nearby Oscar Bar & Café by City Hall Square. The Latin Quarter itself, with its old lanes, bookshops, cafés and students, is a charming area to wander. It is the first port of call for queer visitors to the city.
History
The Latin Quarter takes its name from the nearby University of Copenhagen, where teaching was once in Latin. Around Studiestræde grew, over the decades, the historic heart of the city's queer scene. It is home to Centralhjørnet, one of Europe's oldest gay bars.
