What it is
Today Vesterbro is one of Copenhagen's trendiest districts, with galleries, restaurants, bars, cafés and a lively night scene, especially in Kødbyen. It mixes its industrial, slightly gritty character with hipster flair and is a great place for street food, drinks and going out. Part of the queer nightlife and progressive venues are also found here.
History
From 1879 the city's slaughterhouse district was established in Vesterbro near the railway lines, with its white functionalist halls (Den hvide Kødby) built in 1934. Vesterbro was long a rough working-class and red-light area around Istedgade. Since the 2000s the city has transformed Kødbyen, under the banner 'Meat and Creativity', into a cultural and nightlife quarter.
