Address: Northern Quarter, Manchester
What it is
Today both districts blend historic industrial architecture with a thriving food and going-out scene: the Northern Quarter with independent shops, bars and street art, Ancoats with acclaimed restaurants, breweries and converted mills. The area is among Manchester's trendiest and most food-focused, ideal for wandering.
History
Ancoats is regarded as one of the world's first industrial suburbs, defined by large cotton mills of the late 18th and 19th centuries. After industry declined many mills fell into disuse before the area was regenerated from the 2000s. The neighbouring Northern Quarter saw a similar creative revival from the 1990s.
