Gràcia lies just north of the Eixample, extending up towards Carmel hill and Park Güell.

What it is

Gràcia charms with lively squares lined with bars and terraces, small boutiques and a relaxed, local atmosphere away from the main tourist flows. Its highlight is the Festa Major in August, when residents decorate entire streets with elaborate handmade displays.

History

Gràcia was an independent municipality until it was annexed by Barcelona in 1897, keeping its village-like street grid and independent spirit. The neighbourhood has a long tradition as a stronghold of crafts, politics and grassroots movements.
