Passeig Marítim y la Barceloneta

in Barcelona, Spain

The waterfront: a promenade, urban beaches and seafood beach bars a short walk from the centre.

Where it is

La Barceloneta is a seaside neighbourhood just southeast of the old town, with the Passeig Marítim promenade running along the coast towards the Olympic port.

Address: Passeig Marítim de la Barceloneta - Oriol Bohigas i Guardiola, 08003 Barcelona

What it is

Today La Barceloneta is known for its seafood restaurants, beach bars and the lively bustle of the promenade. The broad city beach and the Passeig Marítim invite swimming, cycling and strolling along the Mediterranean.

History

La Barceloneta was laid out in the mid-18th century as a planned fishing and harbour district with its characteristic narrow blocks. For the 1992 Olympics the city reopened itself to the sea, and the beaches once hidden behind the industrial port were redesigned.
