What it is
Beneath its wrought-iron gateway, hundreds of stalls offer fruit, seafood, ham, cheese and juices, alongside small tapas bars for eating on the spot. Entry is free; the market is closed on Sundays, and a renovation is under way expected to run to 2027.
History
Officially named Mercat de Sant Josep, the market grew from an open-air stall outside the city gates and was inaugurated in its current covered building in 1840. It has been a hub of the city's food trade since the 19th century.
