Kungliga Slottet (Royal Palace)

One of Europe's largest palaces, the working royal residence in Gamla Stan has more than 600 rooms and a daily changing of the guard around midday.

The Royal Palace rises on the northern edge of Gamla Stan, on the island of Stadsholmen.

What it is

Visitors can tour the state apartments, the Treasury with the crown jewels, Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities and the Tre Kronor Museum. The daily changing of the guard is a popular spectacle in the palace's outer courtyard.

History

On the site of the medieval Tre Kronor castle, which burned down in 1697, the present baroque palace was built to designs by Nicodemus Tessin the Younger and occupied around 1754. With more than 600 rooms it is one of Europe's largest palaces and the Swedish king's official residence.
