Monteliusvägen

in Stockholm, Sweden

A cliff-edge walkway along Södermalm's northern ridge offering Stockholm's classic panorama over the water, Old Town and City Hall, especially at sunset.

Where it is

Monteliusvägen runs along the cliff edge of Mariaberget on the northern side of Södermalm, high above Riddarfjärden.

Address: Monteliusvägen, 118 25 Stockholm

What it is

Roughly 500 metres long, the path passes old wooden houses and offers one of Stockholm's finest panoramas over Riddarfjärden, the City Hall and Gamla Stan. Dotted with benches, it is especially popular at sunset and completely free to enjoy.

History

The path is named after the Swedish archaeologist Oscar Montelius (1843–1921), who lived nearby. A walkway along the cliffs was proposed as early as 1977, but the present path was not officially completed and opened until 1998.
