in Stockholm, Sweden
On Djurgården island, this museum displays the Vasa, a near-intact 17th-century warship that sank on its 1628 maiden voyage and was raised three centuries later.
Where it is
The Vasa Museum stands at Galärvarvsvägen 14 on the museum island of Djurgården.
Address: Galärvarvsvägen, 115 21 Stockholm
What it is
The vast, intricately carved ship can be viewed from six levels, from keel to sterncastle, alongside exhibitions on its construction, sinking and recovery. It is the most-visited museum in Scandinavia and one of Stockholm's absolute highlights.
History
The warship Vasa sank just minutes into its maiden voyage in 1628 and was salvaged almost intact in 1961. Over 98% of the ship is original, making it the world's best-preserved 17th-century vessel; the purpose-built museum opened in 1990.
