Address: 49-51 Djurgårdsslätten, 115 21 Stockholm
What it is
Costumed craftspeople work in reconstructed workshops, there is a zoo of Scandinavian animals such as bear, moose and lynx, and sweeping views over the city. During traditions like Midsummer and Lucia, Skansen becomes a lively centre of Swedish culture.
History
Artur Hazelius opened Skansen in 1891 as the world's first open-air museum, to preserve pre-industrial Swedish life. More than 150 historic buildings and farmsteads from across the country were relocated here and faithfully reassembled.
