Església de Sant Bartomeu i Santa Tecla
in Sitges, Spain
The 17th-century baroque parish church perched on a rocky outcrop over the sea — the most photographed silhouette in Sitges.
Where it is
The parish church stands on the La Punta promontory between the old town and the sea, above the Plaça del Baluard and Sant Sebastià beach.
What it is
With its twin towers rising above the sea, the church is the emblem of Sitges and defines every postcard view of the town. Inside it is a three-nave Baroque hall, and the surrounding terrace offers sweeping views over the bay and old town.
History
The present Baroque building was begun in 1665 and consecrated in 1672, on the site of earlier Romanesque and Gothic churches. Its octagonal bell tower dates from 1674, while the bells and the town clock were added in 1868.
