What it is
Gamla Stan offers the Royal Palace, the cathedral, Stortorget square and a maze of cobbled lanes with cafés and boutiques. Norrmalm is the place for shopping around Drottninggatan and Sergels torg, major theatres and cultural institutions, and the central station as a transport hub.
History
Gamla Stan is Stockholm's medieval origin from the 13th century, while Norrmalm developed during the 20th century into the modern business and administrative centre. The old town is also home to some of the city's oldest LGBTQ venues.
