Homophobia at a Central Swiss school: student threatened and bullied over sexual orientation

A student at the Mittelschule und Berufsschule Schwyz (MPS) was subjected to sustained bullying and threats over his sexual orientation. According to reports in Bote der Urschweiz and Display Magazin, the situation escalated at a school sports festival on 28 May 2026: classmates reportedly confronted the student in front of around 100 people with chants including 'you should hang yourself' and other homophobic slurs. Witnesses said the student trembled heavily afterwards and came close to fainting.
The incidents were not limited to the sports festival. According to available reports, the student was also repeatedly verbally targeted in other contexts, with witnesses describing some encounters as intimidating. The school publicly announced follow-up measures, including sensitivity initiatives, but specific disciplinary outcomes were not confirmed at the time of writing.
The case is a reminder that homophobic bullying at Swiss schools is not marginal. According to the 2025 annual report of the LGBTIQ+ Helpline, educational settings account for a significant share of reported hate incidents. Anyone seeking advice or wishing to report an incident can find support services on this platform under Health and Community, and via the national LGBTIQ-Helpline (lgbtiq-helpline.ch).
