"The First Homosexuals": Kunstmuseum Basel shows landmark exhibition on queer history

Kunstmuseum Basel is presenting "The First Homosexuals" until 2 August 2026 — a landmark exhibition featuring approximately 80 artworks that trace the history of sexual identity since 1869, when Karl-Maria Kertbeny coined the word "homosexual". That single term transformed how society understood sexuality, gender and intimacy across the world.
Organised into six sections across three rooms, the exhibition follows how artists over more than 150 years responded to this new categorisation: with resistance, appropriation, subversion and ultimately with pride. Works span painting, sculpture, photography and contemporary art, documenting the evolving treatment of queer identity from the late 19th century to today.
Museum director Elena Filipovic said the exhibition aims to bring "a little more knowledge, tolerance and acceptance" to audiences. For Switzerland's queer community, it is a rare cultural history offering. Kunstmuseum Basel New Building is located at St. Alban-Graben 16. Regular admission applies; free for members.
