PrEP in Switzerland: access grows – but gaps remain

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) monitors PrEP use in Switzerland through the SwissPrEPared network, which connects Checkpoints and medical practices in major cities. Since PrEP was included in the basic health insurance (KVG/LaMal), uptake has risen significantly – particularly in Zurich, Geneva, and Basel.

However, barriers remain: anyone wanting to take PrEP needs a medical prescription and regular check-ups every three months – including an HIV test, STI screening, and kidney function test. In rural areas, access to specialised services is limited. The FOPH recommends speaking with a specialist early on.

The main PrEP contact points in Switzerland are the Checkpoints in Zurich, Geneva, Lausanne, Bern, Basel, and Lucerne, as well as specialised practices. All PrEP resources near you can be found in the health section of this site.
